Rheoscopic Fluid....See Current in Motion

RHEOSCOPIC FLUID
The term "rheoscopic" is the combination of two Greek words - "rheo" - meaning to flow, and "scope" - meaning to watch or see. "Rheoscopic", therefore, means to be able to watch or see something flowing.

Rheoscopic Fluid is a unique and dynamic substance with the ability to produce striking visual images of currents taking place within a liquid. This pearly-white, water-based suspension is excellent for teaching units on ocean currents, aerodynamics, turbulence, convection, and many other concepts which are difficult for students to visualize. Students can actually see the properties of fluid movement!

Rheoscopic Fluid is non-toxic and reusable. It can be colored with food coloring at a rate of 2 to 3 drops per 32 oz. bottle or 1 or 2 drops per 16 oz. bottle. Blue makes an excellent "ocean" color.

Rheoscopic Fluid is appropriate for all grade levels. The following provides some suggestions for a few of the ways in which it can be used in the classroom.

  • This unique fluid has visible currents . . . . . students can actually see the currents in motion.
  • Perform a variety of captivating demonstrations and experiments with this unique fluid. Its suspended microscopic crystals show current movement continually, without dispersing over time.
  • Perform easy aerodynamic experiments by using the fluid to simulate air flow around various shapes in a shallow pan.
  • Younger students will enjoy color-mixing experiments that use drops of food coloring to produce a variety of fluid colors.

  • Activity Guide
An ativity guide included with each order describes demonstrations involving convection, aerodynamics, ocean currents, and erosion. Each activity requires only Rheoscopic Fluid and a few simple materials. Download a copy of the activity guide from the "Resources" page.

    Great for teaching about convection!
Heat Rheoscopic Fluid in a beaker and watch continuous convection currents appear. Pearly crystals in suspension don't disperse like liquid dyes! For hands-on convection experiments, see Go With the Flow - Convection Activities Kit .

    Ocean currents, streams, and more.....
Use Rheoscopic Fluid in models of stream beds, river banks, and coastlines. Currents and patterns of sediment movement around land masses, jetties, etc. become obvious. Create, then fill an ocean basin model (pictured at left) with Rheoscopic Fluid, simulate the trade winds, and create readily visible surface currents.

    Non-Toxic....Reusable
The fluid is non-toxic, ready to use, and reusable. Appropriate for all grade levels, K through College.
